4. life-like, outfielder, inter-racial, IOU’s (plural)

a) Life-like: do not precede “-like” with a hyphen unless the letter “l” would be tripled or if the main element of the word is a proper noun. “Life-like” should not have a hyphen.

b) Outfielder: spelled as an exception to Webster’s New World College Dictionary for baseball.

c) Inter-racial: interracial does not need a hyphen because there isn’t a preceding proper noun, and the “r” is not tripled.

d) IOU, IOUs (plural): no apostrophe for the plural form of IOU.

5. Pianoes, nation-wide, P.T.A., Viet-nam War

a) Pianoes: “pianos” does not have an “e” before the “s”

b) Nation-wide: Nationwide does not have a hyphen, even though it is also a private company.

c) P.T.A.: PTA has no periods separating the P, T, and A.

d) Viet-nam War: Vietnam is not hyphenated because it’s a country.

6. “The train will arrive at twelve noon on Tues.”

a) Do not put a 12 or twelve in front of noon

b) Tues. should be spelled out as Tuesday

c) Drop the word “on” before days or dates unless it is the first word of a sentence

7. “The US Census Bureau defines the south as a Seventeen-state region”

a) “The U.S. Census Bureau”

b) “the South

c) “16-state region”

8. “The judge ruled that because of his oral skills he had entered into a verbal contract.”

a) “…because of his verbal skills…”
